Airpop: Expanded Polystyrene Gets A New Name

Tuesday, 26 May 2015

European Manufacturers of Expanded Polystyrene have undertaken a campaign to rename EPS. The joint-industry initiative highlights the value of a lightweight and extremely useful material...

Expanded Polystyrene has had many names in Europe: EPS, Styropor, Styrofoam, PSE, Piepschuim, Polyfoam - to name just a few. It seems as though an end has been put to that now: EUMEPS Construction have introduced a common European name for EPS: airpop® engineered air.

Mil-tek have a long-standing interesting in all things EPS (sorry, airpop) as we make EPS Compactors that allow firms to recycle their used EPS6 and generate revenue from it. Recycling EPS6 avoids the associated costs and environmental impact of sending bulky material to landfill, and converts it into a useable, commercial material.

From the EUMEPS website:

"Why give a new name to an internationally established material like EPS? Simply because the name airpop immediately brings to mind what the material is made of: air. A lot of air. 98 % air, to be precise. Just a tiny fraction is made of synthetic material, which expands to 50 times its own volume. airpop® easily provides sustainable and affordable construction and insulation by keeping material costs, weight, CO2 emissions and heating costs low.

The airpop campaign is a joint industry initiative of EUMEPS, of European airpop®-converters, of their respective National EPS Associations and of European EPS raw material producers. The creative concept was developed by the communication agency Ogilvy & Mather, Frankfurt / Germany.

Airpop represents an industry of approx. 600 mainly small and medium sized converters in Europe. They process about 1.300.000 tons of raw material into airpop® products. The main applications are building and construction as well as packaging parts."

About EUMEPS

Founded in 1989, the European Manufacturers of Expanded Polystyrene (EUMEPS) is an association that supports the European EPS industry through National Associations. There are two interest groups within the organization: EUMEPS Power Parts and EUMEPS Construction. Both EUMEPS sections promote the advantages of EPS material and provide information about its versatility.
