“Second life” batteries previously used in Renault’s electric vehicles found their purpose in Belgium at a multinational materials technology company. The batteries were used by Umicore to build an energy storage system.
The batteries taken from Renault’s Kangoo utility electrical vehicles will generate revenue for Umicore’s industrial site. The system created by Umicore can be a huge innovation that will prove that renewables, or more accurately variable energy resources, will be accommodated more easily and used to generate power. Moreover, this innovation can also help the company maintain power quality for running its own operations.
It seems that by using the battery packs from the electric vehicles from Renault as a stationary energy storage system, their lifetime can be extended by as much as seven years. And, in times when sustainability is a major challenge and remains an important priority, being able to reuse or repurpose lithium batteries seems like a major opportunity and a bold initiative.
Moreover, the system developed by the company headquartered in Belgium also opens an important door to gain more knowledge and expertise in the field of rechargeable batteries with the purpose of finding their “second life” applications.
